MEET SOME OF OUR TEAM

Its good to know that your trainer has expertise and the right level of knowledge to help you with your fitness journey. The two founders of the box are physiotherapists so you know that you are in great hands and because they are university trained you can have a tremendous amount of confidence in their advice. These days there are a fair few under qualified people out there dispensing inaccurate advice about fitness including poor technique.

Yurri Hynson

CEO & CrossFit Level 2 Coach

I have my Masters Degree in Physiotherapy and three postgraduate Diplomas: Sports medicine, Rehabilitation, and Acupuncture.  Currently, I am midway through my PHD studies. My family owned "Don Olivers" for many years and I had the opportunity to train under Don Oliver who won a gold at a Commonwealth game and competed at 3 Olympic games. My primary sport was Olympic freestyle wrestling which I competed at an international level. I have been CrossFitting for over 6 years. The competitive nature of each workout is really appealing to me, as is the strong sense of community and club-like atmosphere. I am really passionate about Health, Fitness, and Performance.

My passion is seeing others learn to do things that they never thought were possible. I have an attention to detail when it comes to technical faults with exercise.

I am passionate about fitness and exercise. What I love about CrossFit is the strong sense of community which has the effect of encouraging and motivating people to exercise who might otherwise be less inclined. I am a certified personal trainer. My daytime career is project management where I have worked with some big companies.

Robby Underwood

I have been CrossFitting for quite a few years. During the day I work as a Personal Trainer at Les Mills and am an experienced F45 instructor.  What I love about CrossFit and HIIT is the vast range of exercise possibilities that change every day. Its great been able to do a range of activities from Olympic lifting, handstand walking, muscle ups, through to a wide variety of challenging exercise sequences that engage the brain.

I was born into the fitness industry where my grand parents owned a Don Olivers fitness centre. I have spent most of my life training under my uncle at Oliver MMA where I have secured a few National Brazian JuJitsu titles. I have also spent a considerable amount of time training under Steve Oliver the son of New Zealands most celebrated Olympic lifter, Don Oliver and Mark Hunts (UFC) coach. I love CrossFit as a comprehensive training system because it challenges all aspects of my fitness and every workout is a mini competition, which appeals to my highly competitive nature.

I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Prescription and Sports Management, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Physical Education (Distinction), and a Masters degree in Physical Education (Distinction). I have worked as a Health Advisor Team Leader and spent three years as a Senior Lecturer in Māori Health Promotion, Sport and Exercise Sciences.
I have extensive experience as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor which has included 3 years at Les Mills NZ and over 2 years at Kiwi CrossFit as a coach and athlete. Physical activity and exercise are important parts of my life. For me, CrossFit is being prepared for the unknown and the unknowable. It gives you the confidence to achieve a massive variety of athletic feats. It’s cool to be able to look at some sort of physical task and say ‘I can do that'!

Hugh Lawrence

Olympic Weightlifting Coach

I am coaching since 45 years across multiple sports to Olympic and World Championship level, from junior to senior, beginner to elite. A special interest lies in coaching and teaching effectiveness and the application of science to the art of teaching and coaching. Over the time, I have coached national league basketball and volleyball teams, acted as training director for New Zealand Cricket, coached elite weightlifters, squash, tennis and hockey players. Furthermore, I have been a successful sports administrator including a spell as CE of Basketball New Zealand. The Kiwi Barbell squad that I am currently coaching features national and international standard male and female lifters, masters and club athletes. We value technically excellent lifting and a structured training system.
